Malaria causes 200,000+ Deaths in India each Year

October 22nd, 2010

Beginning in 2001 researchers started examining the cause of death 122,000 people in India.  By the end of their research in 2003 they discovered that 3.6% of deaths were probably caused by Malaria.  Extrapolating this to the greater population of India researchers can estimate that 125,000-277,000 people die of Malaria each year in India.  The researchers’ best estimates hover around 205,000 deaths.  When this number was broken down showed that 85,000 deaths were in children younger than 14, while 120,000 were between the ages of 15-69.

Early detection of Malaria is important for treatment, and prevention of serious illness and even death.  CTK offers a wide variety of tests which can detect the Malaria virus at multiple stages.  Click here to learn more.

60% increase in Dengue Cases

October 5th, 2010

In Johor Baru, Malaysia just outside of Singapore the number of cases of dengue since last year has increased more than 60%, including 10 recorded deaths.  Last year there were only three deaths, and it’s only October.

The Johor Health Department said that the number of registered cases has increased from 1,936 to 3,157 during the same time last year.  But Johor Baru is not the only place suffering in Malaysia.  Both Klaung and Pontain have had 440 and 128 cases respectively.  While not as high as Johor Baru, the rainy season is still going strong, and the risk of infection is high.

There are 23 dengue hotspots, including Kampung Melayu Majidee, Kampung Dato Sulaiman Menteri, Taman Johor Jaya, Taman Cendana, Taman Mawar and Taman Cempaka.
