Today is World Malaria Day!

World Malaria Day

On April 25, 2016 people around the world will participate in World Malaria Day, taking part in events to fight against and raise awareness about malaria.

Facts about Malaria1 :

  • 3.2 billion people in 97 countries – nearly half of the world’s population –  are currently at risk for malaria disease transmission
  • Roughly 15 countries – mainly in sub-Saharan Africa – account for 80% of malaria cases and 78% of deaths globally. In 2015, there were over 200 million cases, and close to 500,000 deaths reported from malaria.
  • Between 2000 and 2015, due to increased awareness, education, prevention, and intervention, death rates decreased by about 60%, and reported cases decreased by 37%.

Malaria is a mosquito-borne, hemolytic, febrile illness that is caused by Plasmodium parasites which are transmitted to humans through the bites of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes. Of the five species of Plasmodium that can cause human infection, P. falciparum (Pf) is most prevalent in Africa, and causes the highest number of mortalities globally, while P. vivax (Pv) is found in several countries.

The duration of malaria infection varies between each of the five species. Parasite specific antigens are detectable near the end of the incubation period during primary infection, and antibodies appear near the end of primary infection.  Reinfection leads to a secondary response with a high and rapid rise in antibody levels.

With current technology, malaria infection is determined by the detection of these specific antigens or antibodies in patient serum, plasma or whole blood specimens. Malaria antigen tests detect active infection as well as aid in the monitoring of anti-malarial treatment. Malaria antibody tests are used for blood donor screening and as surveillance tests for malaria control programs around the world.
