Troponin I

Troponin I is a protein normally not found in serum, released only when myocardial damage occurs which makes it a sensitive and specific marker of acute coronary syndrome (ACS) including myocardial infarction. Early accurate diagnosis of ACS may influence the patient’s prognosis, however, symptoms may be atypical or nonexistent and electrocardiogram changes may be absent or nonspecific. Troponin I tests, therefore, present an effective tool to aid in the diagnosis of myocardial infarction rapidly to allow prompt care.
